Minutes of the Hamilton-Wentworth Executive

1. CHAPTER UPDATES
Volunteer Hours:
Andrea Johnson: 2 hrs.
Rosalind Minaji: 10 hrs
Frank Torelli: 3 hrs
Kaywana Gargarello 10 hrs

Membership Report: Tabled

Action Items:
• Myra to report on updated membership list.
• Myra to submit new members from SEVEC.
• Andrea to submit new members from Summer Camp to CPF Ottawa and copy Myra

Treasurer’s Report
Report attached
• Income from School Concerts was $3,094.00: Gregg Le Rock (2007) $1,468, Gotta Love that French (2008) $1,626.00
• Income under Membership dues ($975.00) should be listed under SEVEC as these were paid as part of the fees for Non-members.
• SEVEC National has not received fees for trip

Action Items:
• Frank & Roz to fill out required forms and provide fees to SEVEC National for the exchange.
• Frank to list Membership dues ($975) under SEVEC

Communication:
• The April 2008 Newsletter was distributed with the exception of Westdale (as we were short by
approximately 250 copies.
• Roz prepared and distributed a flier to promote the new French Immersion Information night for Lawfield. The new night was planned to try and boost SK registration numbers at the new F.I. site.

Action Items:
• Roz will take some promotional Newsletters and distribute the rest to Westdale and Myra for membership mailing.
• Roz to double check distribution numbers

2. PAST CHAPTER EVENTS
.1 Concerts:
• Gotta Love that French, generally well accepted.
• Discussed other possible performers, in an effort to make thing new and exciting.
Action Items:
• All to be on the look-out for new French performers / performances.

.2 French Public Speaking:
• Public Board posted an article about the French Public Speaking contest on their e-newsletter – there was no mention of CPF.
• The Public Board winners are preparing to go to the Provincial celebration in May.
• The Catholic Board is having their Elementary French Public Speaking contest on Monday, May 7 (Sts. Peter & Paul at 6:30pm, for grades 5-8, and have asked if CPF could provide prizes.
• Cathedral High school will be sending representatives to the Provincial competition.
Action Items:
• Kaywana to attend Catholic elementary competition.
• Andrea to investigate possible (5) gift cards for French Material or provide (5) books as prizes for Catholic Elementary competition.

3. UPCOMING CHAPTER EVENTS

.1 SEVEC:
• Twins have not been assigned by the Quebec Trip leader as of yet.
• All Ontario events have been booked.
Action Items:
• Pre-trip social activities are to be planned.
• Counsellors are to be hired

.2 AGM:
• Survival Night– Wednesday, May 14, 2008. 7:00pm at St. Joseph Elementary.
• Childcare for School aged children to be provided.
• Roz to present for 10 minutes on CPF AGM material (financial statement, year’s accomplishments, executive membership)
• Mlle. Black to present for ½ hour: How to help with homework, French pronunciation, Helping with Dictee.
• Hamilton Public Library for ¼ hour: French Resources at the library, and will have a display.
• CPF (Rosalind Minaji) for ¼ hour: French Activities outside the classroom.

Action Items:
Kaywana:
• 3 display tables (library & CPF displays, and membership sales).
• 50 chairs in classroom
• need screen in classroom
• Ask about projector for showing movie in the gym.
• Can we use Milk room for setting up snacks
• Lock balcony doors (so kids cannot access)
• Ask Mlle. Black if she needs help with any handouts & if she will be bring her power point on a disc
• 2 $20 gift certificates for Starbucks as speaker gifts
• Design Invitations & send to Myra
• Drinks – 1 case water, 48 boxes of apple juice, & coffee
• Call Staples about details of printing on stickers and bringing pages in the future.
• Ask Dianne if she will continue as Communication Officer

Rosalind:
• To ask Myra if she is available to sell memberships, if not get Frank to check his schedule.
• Print handouts
• Bring CPF display
• Bring equipment
• Bring snacks
• Make AGM presentation (Financial Statement & Executive positions)
• Make presentation about French activities – include CPF Camp.
• Ask Myra to consider Executive position

Andrea:
• In charge of Childcare
• Crafts & movie
• Will print labels for agendas and deliver to Kaywana

Frank:
• Prepare Financial Statement
• Check Schedule for AGM
• Ask Diana if she will be Treasurer

.3 Franco-Fete:
• Will wait till after the AGM to follow up.

4. SEPARATE BOARD ISSUES
• Accommodation Review almost complete, hopefully the Board will then start acting on French Immersion issues.
• Kaywana spoke with the French Resource teacher about issues, no answer to date.
• Article in April’s Newsletter letting the Public know that the French Immersion Review is on hold.

5. PUBLIC BOARD ISSUES

.1 CPF will be presenting the Board with a plaque celebrating 25 years of French Immersion in the Board, at the Board Meeting on April 28. Roz will attend with CPF Ontario’s Executive Director and will speak to new developments in the Board.
Action Items:
• Deb Edwards to take a picture if she attends.

.2 Roz attended the last FIAC meeting:
• New French Immersion sites at Dundana and Waterdown are doing well.
• New French Immersion site at Lawfield having trouble with enrollment –a third SK information night will be held May 13 and CPF has helped to promote this.
• New French Immersion site at Ancaster has been approved for SK, although enrollment is low. The Grade one class was not approved –only SK. Enrollment is currently at 20 students, but more would be better. Boundaries do not include the Meadowlands which still feed into Norwood.
• Westdale has had 100 French Immersion students in Grade 9 for the past 5 years – the High school program is healthy. Future accommodation for FI at Westdale will not be a problem due to overall declining enrollment in the general school population.
• A motion was made to the committee of the whole:
- To make Bussing for French Immersion equitable between new and existing FI school sites.
- To consider improvements to French Immersion bussing as part of the transportation review looking to join the public and Catholic Board’s services.
